  6.    This file includes instructions for upgrading your existing Mail Manager
  7.    or Mail Manager +Plus+ installation to version 4.00.  Please see
  8.    HISTORY.DOC or WHATSNEW.400 for a complete list of changes in this
  9.    version.  There are many.
  10.  
  11.    First, some quick notes about our "wide beta" program:
  12.  
  13.    For our brave registered users, we tried a "wide beta" distribution of
  14.    early v4.00 code, to help wipe out the early bugs in this major update.
  15.    We had been working on v4.00 since September of '94, and there were
  16.    a sufficient number of changes to warrant testing outside of our own
  17.    environments.  Those of you who are currently running one of these wide
  18.    betas (v3.91a through 3.94b) need basically only drop in the new
  19.    executables and go.  There are no format changes from the wide betas
  20.    to this actual release.  
  21.  
  22.    Those of you running 3.91a or 3.91c should also do this:
  23.  
  24.        - Run the new MAILCFG, and set the 2nd option on the 2nd screen
  25.          accordingly, for whether or not to allow RIP detection.
  26.  
  27.        - Copy your existing MAILMGR.PRO (or PROTO.DEF) that you're using
  28.          with the door to a file named MMGR.PRO, in the directory for text
  29.          files, as specified in MAILCFG.  Node-specific versions of MMGRx.PRO
  30.          are supported. 
  31.  
  32.    That should be it.  Users of 3.92a and up should have already done this.
  33.  
  34.    Next, what all is included in this package:

  36.    WHATSNEW.400 - Differences since the previous release (v3.61).
  37.  
  38.    HISTORY.DOC  - Everything that has changed since the release of the v1.3x
  39.                   series of the door.
  40.  
  41.    MMGR.DOC     - Instructions for setting up/using the door to its full
  42.                   capabilities.
  43.  
  44.    NETINFO.DOC  - How to use the QWK networking features of the door.
  45.                   (Definitely a separate subject in and of itself).
  46.  
  47.    README.1ST   - This file - to tell you what you're getting into. <g>

  49.    REGISTER.DOC - To help you support the SHAREWARE concept!

  52.    UPDT361.ZIP contains two executables for users of v3.51 and lower.

  55.    UPDATE.EXE -   Converts your existing setup to v3.61.  This allows the
  56.                   UPDATE.EXE for v4.00 to work with your setup.
  57.  
  58.    UPDATUSR.EXE - Converts your existing v1.3x MAILMGR.USR to the format
  59.                   of v3.61.  * RUN THIS ONE ONLY IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM
  60.                   THE FREE v1.3x SERIES!!! *

  63.    UPDT400.ZIP contains two executables to update your v3.52 through 3.61
  64.                setup to v4.00.

  67.    UPDATE.EXE   - Update a Mail Manager +Plus+ v3.52-v3.61 configuration to
  68.                   v4.0 format.  This makes a lot of new filenames.

  70.    UPDATUSR.EXE - Updates MAILMGR.USR to the new format of Mail Manager +Plus+
  71.                   v4.0 and higher (MMGR.USR).  For users of v2.xx and above
  72.                   only!

  139.                   CFG2TXT.EXE utility.  This file can be directly
  140.                   compiled to Mail Manager's binary format with
  141.                   TXT2CFG.EXE.

  143.    SAMPLE.CFG   - Sample MNET configuration file for the NODE end of
  144.                   a QWK network.

  147.    Also included are two of our supplemental programs:

  149.    MFIX433.ZIP  - Version 4.33 of our purge/renum/repair utility for *M.DEF's,
  150.                   now included as a complete package, with source code.  v4.33
  151.                   is a maint. release to the 4.3 series, fixes problems with
  152.                   handling messages greater than 4K in length, and works with
  153.                   the new auxiliary user files in MMGR+ v4.x.
  154.  
  155.    MNET210.ZIP  - Version 2.10 of our QWK->REP Conversion utility for QWK 
  156.                   networks, now included as a complete package.  v2.10
  157.                   includes a new MNETCFG utility to automate the creation
  158.                   of program configuration files.  The MNET package can be
  159.                   registered separately.
  160.  
  161.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  162.    UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION:
  163.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  164.  
  165.    If you are upgrading from a version lower than 1.30, your best bet is
  166.    to set up Mail Manager +Plus+ from scratch.  The changes are simply
  167.    too extensive to be handled as an update.
  168.  
  169.    Version 4.00 is a MAJOR update to Mail Manager +Plus+.  The formats of
  170.    the configuration and user files have both changed, as well as the
  171.    file names of most of the door's other support files.  We suggest
  172.    following this checklist IN ORDER:
  173.  
  174.        [ ] - Back up your Mail Manager directory!  It never hurts to
  175.              play it safe in case you need to fall back to your current
  176.              version for some reason.
  177.  
  178.        [ ] - We distributed several wide beta versions of the door, on
  179.              the road to the very version that you're installing now.
  180.              The final wide beta was v3.94b, and if you are upgrading
  181.              from that version, you need only replace the executables,
  182.              install the *.HL* help files, and the rip files (MMGRR*.*).
  183.              The rest of you, keep reading. :)
  184.  
  185.        [ ] - If you are currently running a version of the door that
  186.              contains an MUSER.EXE utility, we suggest running your
  187.              current MUSER to purge inactive users prior to converting to
  188.              v4.00.  This will speed up the conversion process.
  189.  
  190.        [ ] - Overwrite all executables with the ones contained within
  191.              400-EXE.ZIP.  (You backed up your old ones, right?)
  192.  
  193.        [ ] - If your current version of the door is between v1.30 and
  194.              v3.51, you must do the following next:
  195.  
  196.                   A - Unzip the enclosed file UPDT361.ZIP, and run
  197.                       the enclosed UPDATE.EXE utility.
  198.  
  199.                   B - If you are upgrading from the free version of Mail
  200.                       Manager (v1.30 through v1.36a), run the
  201.                       UPDATUSR.EXE that was included in the UPDT361.ZIP
  202.                       archive.  DO NOT run this utility if you are
  203.                       upgrading from any version of Mail Manager +Plus+,
  204.                       v2.00 to v3.61!!
  205.  
  206.                   C - Delete UPDATE.EXE and UPDATUSR.EXE.  You won't need
  207.                       them again.
  208.  
  209.              This will update your setup sufficiently so that the files
  210.              contained in UPDT400.ZIP can do their job.  At this point
  211.              you have effectively upgraded your setup to v3.61.
  212.  
  213.        [ ] - Unzip the enclosed file UPDT400.ZIP, which contains the new
  214.              UPDATUSR and UPDATE utilities.  THESE TWO UTILITIES WILL
  215.              ONLY WORK WITH VERSIONS 3.52 THROUGH 3.61 OF THE DOOR!
  216.  
  217.        [ ] - Run UPDATUSR.EXE.  This will carry your MAILMGR.USR data
  218.              forward into the new MUSR.MGR file format used by v4.00.
  219.              Some of the data formerly stored in MAILMGR.USR will be moved
  220.              out to new conference auxiliary user files which will be
  221.              created automatically. (More on these later.)
  222.  
  223.        [ ] - Run UPDATE.EXE to convert your current MAILMGR.CFG file to the
  224.              new format (MMGR.CFG).  This will carry your current
  225.              configuration settings over into the new file format for
  226.              version 4.00. If you wish to convert a node-specific
  227.              configuration file (MMGRx.CFG instead of MMGR.CFG), pass the
  228.              full path/filename on the command line (such as UPDATE
  229.              C:\MMGR\MAILMGR1.CFG), and repeat for each node-specific file.
  230.              UPDATE.EXE will also copy many of your support files over to
  231.              the new file name conventions used by v4.00.
  232.  
  233.              UPDATE.EXE should be run *AFTER* UPDATUSR.EXE.  UPDATE.EXE
  234.              gives you the option of deleting your old configuration and
  235.              text files when it is finished running.  The UPDATUSR
  236.              utility requires that your old door configuration file
  237.              (MAILMGR.CFG) be present in the current directory when it runs.
  238.              We strongly suggest that you make a backup of your MAILMGR.CFG
  239.              and MAILMGR.USR before updating your setup.
  240.  
  241.              After you have run UPDATUSR and UPDATE, you will not need
  242.              them again, and you can delete them from your disk.
  243.  
  244.        [ ] - Overwrite the MMGR*.HL1 and MMGR*.HL2 help files that the
  245.              conversion process created with the ones included in the
  246.              400-TXT archive.  These are the new help files, which have
  247.              been revised with this release.
  248.  
  249.        [ ] - If you plan to allow RIP graphics in the door, install the
  250.              MMGRR*.* files from the 400-TXT archive.  Put these in the
  251.              same directory in which you have installed the door.
  252.  
  253.    At this point the basics are in place.  Depending on which version of
  254.    the door you are upgrading from, some or all of the rest of the text
  255.    and configuration files contained in the 400-TXT archive may have
  256.    changed.  You will want to have a look at them and compare against
  257.    your existing setup.
  258.  
  259.    The options in MAILCFG have changed.  You will want to run the new
  260.    MAILCFG against all of your door configuration files (MMGR*.CFG) to
  261.    set the new options accordingly for your system.
  262.  
  263.    Some of the system text files have changed in format, and there may be
  264.    new ones that you need to be aware of and modify accordingly.  At this
  265.    point, you may want to load up the main documentation (MMGR.DOC), and
  266.    have a look at the section of this manual that discusses the text
  267.    configuration files that the door uses, and modify yours accordingly.
  268.  
  269.    The door is now MMGR.EXE instead of MAILMGR.EXE.  Change the batch
  270.    file that loads the door accordingly.
  271.

  273.    IF YOU'RE SETTING UP FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  274.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  275.  
  276.    There is no such thing as a "QUICK INSTALL" for Mail Manager +Plus+,
  277.    although the first steps would be:
  278.  
  279.        - Create the directory \MMGR directory off of your root,
  280.        - De-compress the archives 400-EXE.ZIP and 400-TXT.ZIP there,
  281.        - Edit the text files MMGR.SWP and MMGR.FMS accordingly,
  282.        - Run MAILCFG.EXE, and follow the prompts, then...
  283.        - Follow standard procedure for adding a new door to your system
  284.          (DOORS.DEF, MENU5*, etc. etc.)
  285.  
  286.        - A minimal MMGR.BAT file might look something like:
  287.  
  288.               copy c:\rbbs\dorinfo1.def c:\mmgr\dorinfo1.def
  289.               cd\mmgr
  290.               mmgr 1
  291.               cd\rbbs
  292.  
  293.    However, we do *NOT* recommend that you do it this way if you have
  294.    more than a handful of conferences, and plan to add or delete any
  295.    in the forseeable future.  A little advance planning *NOW* can save
  296.    you a world of grief later, and there are many customizable text
  297.    files that you may want to change.
  298.  
  299.    Full installation instructions are found in the MMGR.DOC file.
  300.    Mail Manager +Plus+ is a VERY involved door, with many capabilities,
  301.    and encompasses just about your entire RBBS-PC (and frontend mailer)
  302.    setup.  There is no substitute for having a printed copy of MMGR.DOC
  303.    handy.
